New York Jets: Robby Anderson arrest changes free agency
Following Robby Anderson’s arrest in Florida, the New York Jets are left with no choice but to cut the budding star and replace him in free agency.
In 2017, New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson was 59 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard season in his career. He was on the precipice of stardom on a team bereft of stars after a breakout season that had many clamoring for what was next to come.
However, he was arrested in Sunrise, FL on nine charges including two felonies after being pulled over earlier this week at 2:00 a.m. ET.
According to Travis Durkee of The Sporting News the counts are as follows:
"Felony fleeing and eluding police with lights and sirens activeFelony threatening a public servant or family memberMisdemeanor resisting arrest without violenceMisdemeanor reckless drivingFailure to drive in a single laneDisobeying/avoiding a red lightDisobeying/avoiding a red light (second count)Exceeding speed limit by 50 mph or moreTurning when unsafe/without signaling"
This wasn’t Anderson’s first brush with the law. In May he was arrested following an altercation with a police officer at a music festival in Miami. Normally, I am an advocate for multiple chances, but according to the same piece by Durkee the arresting officer was quoted as writing the following in the police report:
"“He continued [to] make other verbal threats towards my family. Based on his statements it was clear that he intended to sexually assault my wife. He also began to brag about how much money he has and how all I was doing was trying to do is ‘ruin his fun.'”"
What the Jets must do now
That’s a horrible reflection on the NFL and the Jets. The Jets have no choice but to cut him as soon as the league year begins.

That means the Jets will have to target a wide receiver in free agency. Given his ability in the return game, and the fact that he was 13 yards shy of his third consecutive 1,000-yard season, Jarvis Landry must be a target for the Jets to replace Anderson. He would be a great complement to Quincy Enunwa. He would also give the Jets a true No. 1 receiving target they currently don’t have.
Anderson has left the Jets no other options. It’s time to move on from him and on to a new No. 1 option.
