2018 NFL Draft: 5 Big-bodied wide receiver targets for San Francisco 49ers
Courtland Sutton
SMU’s Courtland Sutton is already viewed as one of the best receivers in the draft, and there are plenty of reasons why. He has the size at 6-4 and 215 pounds and can box out defenders over the middle and in the end zone and boasts the body control and athleticism to make NFL-level highlight reel grabs by the sideline with both feet in bounds.
Sutton attacks the football with his hands and shows the ability to win off the line and, like Tate, is able to create some separation downfield.
Adept at gearing down, sinking into his breaks and working his way back to the football on comebacks and hitch routes, Sutton is better after the catch than you would anticipate for a receiver of his size and is occasionally able to make defenders miss despite a lack of quick-twitch athleticsm.
A committed blocker who attacks his task well, Sutton is an extremely well-rounded receiver but does have a number of areas he will need to work on at the next level.
Sutton doesn’t dominate at the catch point in the way Cobbs and Tate do and has had issues letting the ball go through his hands. Like Cobbs, an over-reliance on physicality has led to offensive pass interference penalties and, in the modern NFL where that is a point of emphasis, it is something he will soon need to correct.
