Mario Edwards Jr.

When defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. suits up to play, he can add pressure and set the edge against the run. Unfortunately, he’s been on and off the field in each of his three seasons.

The versatile defensive lineman has missed 18 games, 14 during the 2016 term due to a hip injury. Edwards’ ailments have resulted in short- and long-term absences, which allowed other players to see more snaps on the front line. It didn’t work out in Jihad Ward‘s favor during the 2016 campaign. On the other hand, Denico Autry has taken advantage of increased playing time over the past few years.

Barring an early extension, Autry will become an unrestricted free agent. Nonetheless, it’s the talent on the books beyond the 2018 season that may push Edwards out of the door. Expect the Florida State product to hold a significant role under defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, allowing him an opportunity to put together a complete year of production.

However, another injury could put Edwards on the sideline watching able bodies attempt to impress a new coaching staff. Going into his fourth year, the 2015 second-rounder must approach the upcoming term like a rookie pushing for a starting job.
