Super Bowl 52: Why Eagles’ Fletcher Cox will win MVP

Super Bowl 52 will come down to the Philadelphia Eagles defense finding a way to stop Tom Brady, which is why Fletcher Cox will win MVP.

The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles will meet in Super Bowl LII for their second matchup in the Big Game in the history of the franchises. The MVP of that Super Bowl was Deion Branch, the only time the Patriots won the Super Bowl and Brady wasn’t named the games MVP.

This year brings an NFC East team with a ferocious defense to Minneapolis to face the Patriots. The last two times the NFC East sent a defense with the talent and skills similar to the Eagles to the Super Bowl, the Patriots met their match (RE: The Giants).

When it comes to the history of the MVP of the Big Game though, five quarterbacks have won it multiple times (for a total of 13), and the other 38 Super Bowls have had 39 MVP winners. Super Bowl XII had co-MVP winners on the Cowboys defense, and, of the 44 men who’ve won the award, only 11 non-offensive players have won the award (10 on defense and one on special teams).

On the defensive side of the ball, two of the position have had only one player win the award at the position. Larry Brown was the only cornerback to win the award in Super Bowl XXX, and Randy White is the one of only two defensives tackle to win the award, alongside his defensive line mate, Harvey Martin.

The New England offensive line has gotten better as the season has progressed, but Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox is a beast. Cox will force his way into the New England backfield and hound Brady all day. How much so?

He will total eight quarterback pressures (including two sacks), a forced fumble, and one of his plays will result in an interception for the secondary. As a result, he will become the 11th defensive player in the history of the Big Game to walk away as the MVP.
