Chicago Bears: 7-Round 2018 mock draft in late January
Round 1: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame (6-8, 315 pounds)
In this mock, there was a run on quarterbacks and defensive players. That dropped Mike McGlinchey onto the Bears’ lap. I saw a lot of mocks having the Bears pick Connor Williams, but I think Williams is a bit overrated. He lacks the strength to succeed in the NFL and he already suffered some injuries.
Of course, with the Bears hiring former Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand to serve in the same capacity in Chicago, if McGlinchey is available choosing him is a no-brainer. His familiarity with Hiestand is valuable.
McGlinchey has the strength and speed to handle edge rushers. HIs quick feet allow him to stay in front of a speed rusher and his strength allows him to sustain blocks. He blocks the run very well. Most left tackles are good against the pass but lack the skills against the run. McGlinchey was a big reason the Fighting Irish had a great running game.
McGlinchey keeps his hands in great position in front of him and his strong hands Nagy’s offense requires a lot of speed and athleticism. Having the old style of big, unathletic, and lumbering linemen won’t work. McGlinchey probably starts on the right side in his rookie season. Bobby Massie has an out and I think the Bears take that out to free up space for other areas.
McGlinchey isn’t one to keep quiet. He was one of Notre Dame’s most vocal player. He’ll be a team leader in the locker room and become a fan favorite very soon.
