New York Jets: 2018 Offseason predictions, 7-round mock draft, Vol. 2.0
Todd Bowles wants his defense to be aggressive. That said, they don’t have the talent on the outside right now to be too aggressive. In order to play the style of defense that Bowles wants to, the Jets need a big cornerback like Carlton Davis.
Davis’ size hinders him in one area, downfield coverage. If the Jets want a big corners, a la Richard Sherman, they’re going to have to take the good with the bad, and that is, sometimes he will get beat downfield, but the positives he brings this offense is too much for that to be a huge issue.
He doesn’t allow his man to get the ball much. According to Pro Football Focus Elite, he allowed a catch every 15.9 times in coverage, a passer rating of 69.5 and only two touchdowns. The only issue was the yards after catch allowed, and that was 122, but he allowed so few catches that that stat can be overlooked.
The combination of Marcus Maye, Jamal Adams, Davis and Malcolm Butler could present an East Coast version of the Legion of Boom, and that could be trouble for all of the Jets opponents in the near future. The Jets defense would be in business to play the kind of style Bowles wants, and the Jets fans would love.
