Jacksonville Jaguars: Positions to upgrade in 2018 NFL Draft
By Larry Brake
The Jacksonville Jaguars will probably address these positions in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft as they could use an upgrade.
Dave Caldwell, the Jacksonville Jaguars general manager, has built the team’s roster for the long haul. The Jaguars defense is one of the top units in the league, if not the best in the NFL. He has drafted well and signed free agents that are currently contributing to Jacksonville’s success.
Prior to the 2017 season, many fans wanted he Jaguars to part ways with Caldwell. Tom Coughlin solidified the player evaluation due to his eye for talent. The 2017 draft was very successful. Looking back to 2013, Caldwell missed on the first round pick. Luke Joeckel did not play to the high expectations that first-rounders face. He has hit home runs since his inaugural draft class, however.
The key to a good draft is talent evaluation. In the last four drafts, the Jaguars have selected 31 players. There are still 20 players still with the team. Caldwell should receive more credit for upgrading the Jaguars roster.
First of all, Jacksonville had top five picks through the last four drafts. The available talent changes the direction of franchises. Jacksonville went from AFC South’s worst to first. Now, Jacksonville is looking to upgrade and build for the future. But what positions should they be targeting in the 2018 NFL Draft?
Expect Caldwell to address the tight end position. Marcedes Lewis has played well but he is past his prime. Mark Andrews would be a top tight end to target in the first round.
Next, offensive linemen are the key to successful offenses. They are crucial to protecting the quarterback and opening holes for the running game. Let’s hope that the Jaguars find a left guard in the second round and right tackle in the third.

In the fourth round, the Jaguars might select a quarterback. Most of the high profile collegiate quarterbacks will be taken early. There might be a diamond in the rough, though. Remember who the 199th pick in the 2000 draft was? Tom Brady, of course.
In later picks, Jacksonville might select a running back, linebacker, or a wide receiver. The offensive depth will benefit from this draft. Trust Caldwell and Coughlin to select the best players to bring the AFC Championship to Jacksonville.
