The New York Giants are stuck in salary cap purgatory in 2018, which increases the importance of the 2018 NFL Draft for building their foundation.

According to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, Purgatory is a place where souls go for purification after death while awaiting entrance into Heaven. The New York Giants are stuck in the proverbial Salary Cap Purgatory with their cap situation in 2018, and it’ll be difficult to build a winner immediately.

Even if the Giants cut the players with the biggest daunting contracts (Eli Manning, Brandon Marshall, and Dominique Rodgers Cromartie) that leaves them with a little more than $35 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.

That’s certainly not enough to become a big player in free agency in 2018. They’re going to have to start from scratch in the draft and try and save for the carryover in 2019.

In New York, it’s tough for sports fans to have patience, especially with the backdrop of 27 world championships in the Bronx. However, the Giants fans need to be patient, because building a winner doesn’t happen overnight. (Just ask the fans of your team’s housemates, and even their patience is growing thin.)

The truth is the Giants should limit their spending as much as possible in free agency in 2018. Regardless of what you think the team will look like in 2018, they need to save as much for the 2019 carryover as possible, especially since their 2018 carryover is negative.

Things begin with the 2018 NFL Draft. They can build a solid foundation of young core players and add to them in 2019. They can develop the players from within, and then bring in additional pieces to get where they need to go. Unfortunately for the veterans, it may mean no Super Bowls for them, and they will eventually become cap casualties.

The future can be bright. They just need to hit in the draft.
