With a successful season behind them, expectations for the New Orleans Saints are high but should be kept to a tame level for now.

The New Orleans Saints had a terrific 2017 season. From the way their draft classed played out to their free agent finds to the guys who have been there, everyone played their hardest. Early prognostications have already pegged the team as a contender for the Super Bowl, but is it too early to be putting pressure on the Saints already?

The goal for the Saints in 2017 was basically just to be better. They went above and beyond that, including a playoff run. Unfortunately, it ended in Minnesota, but it turned a new page for the team. The team went from one of the best offensive units with a lackluster defense to having one of the best defensive units, too.

The change has been unprecedented, but not without some struggles. I’ll be the first to admit: I believed the Saints could get to the Super Bowl and believe they still can. As a fan, that’s what you’re supposed to think about your team.

However, it’s a little early in the season to be thinking about the future. The players need a chance to catch their breath, regroup and get back to basics. Everyone just needs to pump the breaks and get realistic for a moment.

Realistically, Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara are one of the best backfields in the league. It would be dumb not to assume Kamara could slack a little bit. Yes, he’s talented but he also got a few lucky runs in, too. Facing off against the No. 1 team in each division isn’t as easy as facing the

The same can be said for the Saints receiving corps or should I say, Michael Thomas. During the offseason, the team needs to focus on acquiring some receivers. Relying solely on Thomas and Kamara is going to be a lot harder this upcoming season.

The offense has some cracks, but the biggest question mark heading into next season is the defense. After the mistake in Minnesota, it’s not going to be easy to rebuild the team’s confidence. Looking at Marcus Williams, he’s going to have to earn the teams and fans trust again.

Looking at the upcoming draft is a huge question mark as well. Will the team finally draft a pass rusher in the first round or focus on another need? With such a talented group in 2017, hopes are high and we’re all hoping for a class just as talented.

Either way, it’s a little early to be pegging the team as a Super Bowl contender. Both fans and the team need to keep their expectations realistic. Don’t focus on what could be happening and focus more on the now.
