New York Jets: Christian Hackenberg or Josh Allen in 2018?
Fans of the New York Jets are hoping that Josh Allen falls to them at No. 6, or possibly for the team to make a move up to get him, but we’ve seen this movie before.
Is the New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan or Phil Connors? Frankly, if the team were to draft Josh Allen, it would feel a little like the movie Groundhog Day.
Just two years ago, the New York Jets were selecting 51st overall, and a quarterback was sitting there. He played behind a terrible offensive line, and had little around him do to sanctions at his school. He was inaccurate and inconsistent as a passer at Penn State, and when Christian Hackenberg was selected, fans didn’t exactly like the selection.
Fast forward two years, and now a small school quarterback, who was inaccurate, and didn’t play consistently is the one fans want. Josh Allen gets the benefit of the doubt (only because of where he played) for playing with a bad team around him, but he shouldn’t.
Frankly, it’s a little hypocritical, given what happened at Penn State, to kick Hackenberg to the door and then give the reigns to a guy who showed the same issues he did in college. Has Hackenberg not given the coaches any reason to believe in him in the two years he’s been with the Jets? Probably.
That said, fans are clamoring for a franchise quarterback. They want the team to draft Allen and build around him, because he can supposedly perform better if the right pieces are around him. That’s a funny argument. The same can be said about Hackenberg.

Build a team around him, and take the training wheels off. See what you have, and if it fails so be it. You don’t have any big names that stand out now for the 2019 NFL Draft, but give that some time. Players like Jarrett Stidham and Clayton Thorson will open some eyes in 2018, and the Jets can trade up to get one of them if they fail with Hackenberg.
