With Johnny Manziel trying to get his life back in order, it may be time for the Dallas Cowboys to kick the tires on a potential NFL return
This week on Good Morning America, Johnny Manziel discussed how everything went wrong for him. He was open, honest and sounded sincere. With him pining for an NFL comeback, it begs the question of whether or not the Dallas Cowboys should be interested.
It’s easy to scoff and dismiss such a notion, but is it that crazy? Manziel was nearly the Cowboys pick coming out of Texas A&M back in 2014. Instead, they decided to go with guard Zack Martin, and it clearly was the right pick.
Martin has become one of the best guards in the entire NFL and Manziel flamed out after just two seasons with Cleveland. He completed 57 percent of his passes and had 1,675 yards passing with seven touchdowns and interceptions apiece. He did add another 259 yards rushing and another touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to look past his off-field issues and drinking problem.
Manziel however says those days are behind him. He was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and took all the blame for how he acted, which was refreshing. He claims he self-medicated with alcohol and blames his doing so as what got him where he is.
"“You are left staring at the ceiling by yourself and in that depression and back in that dark hole of sitting in a room by yourself, super depressed, thinking about all the mistakes you made in your life, what did that get me? Where did that get me except out of the NFL? Where did that get me? Disgraced.” ‚ — Manziel on GMA, via ESPN"
Words are just that though. What people want to see is action. After two seasons away from the NFL, Manziel has kept his nose clean and he won’t prove to any team he’s a better person until he has a job in the NFL. Could that potentially be with the Dallas Cowboys?
He’s a Texas legend and there’s no secret that team owner Jerry Jones once wanted him badly. As it stands now, he wouldn’t be coming to the team as a star player, but instead as a 25-year old competing with Cooper Rush to backup Dak Prescott.
Sure, Manziel is unorthodox at 6-0 and maybe 210 pounds. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t electric in college though, and him trying to make a comeback in his home state would be the kind of press Jones lives for.
Dallas has nothing to lose. If Manziel stinks, it’s not like they cost him anything. But if Jones was upset when the team didn’t draft him in 2014, how mad will they be if he gose elsewhere and shows signs of who he was for the Aggies?
