The biggest problem for the New York Jets wasn’t their quarterback in 2017, it was the offensive line, and they should use the 2018 NFL Draft to fix it.

Using analytics is all the rage in the NFL, and when you analyze the New York Jets offensive line in the 2017 season from different analytical points of view, you can see why the team finished 5-11. So let’s look.

The running game was terrible. Part of that was due to the offensive line. According to Football Outsiders the line was responsible for 3.75 yards per carry on runs up the middle. When compared to the Super Bowl teams, it’s not great. Both of their offensive lines were responsible for over 4.0 yards per carry up the middle.

When it comes to pass protection, the Jets weren’t much better. According to Pro Football Focus Elite, they allowed a total of 175 pressures, and their guards and centers allowed 101 of them.

Isaiah Wynn played left tackle for Georgia this past season, but he’s better suited for a move inside in the NFL. Pro Football Focus Elite gave Wynn a pass block efficiency rating of 98.5 out of 100. They credited him with four combined hurries and sacks allowed (two each) and zero QB hits allowed. That’s as a left tackle against more athletic defensive ends.

If he moves inside to guard in the NFL, he won’t have to rely so much on athleticism, but strength, and he’s strong enough to handle the inside.

He was also a part of an offensive line that ranked in the top 50 in many of the categories of Football Outsiders. That includes two of their major categories, power success rate, and adjusted line yards, both of which the Jets were near the bottom in for 2017.

Wynn would provide an instant upgrade to an awful offensive line. The Jets would see an immediate increase in performance of their running and passing game with this addition.
