New York Jets: 7-Round 2018 mock draft in mid-February
There are two problems with this pick from a Jets fan perspective. He’s not the quarterback they want (most want Josh Allen), and he’s the kind of quarterback Jets fans dread. He’s a developmental pick. That said, he’s not the type of developmental pick that Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg were.
Those two quarterbacks had footwork issues which affected their accuracy. Barrett, on the other hand, doesn’t have that problem. His problem is timing, and that can be fixed with NFL coaching. He doesn’t throw guys open, and can be a second late on his throws, which can get his receivers hurt in the NFL.
He also has “below average” release and arm strength, according to NFL.com. However, he does have a strong base, so his lack of arm strength could be attributed to his release point, and if that gets fixed, he might be better at downfield throws.

He checks the boxes for character and leadership ability teams look for. He just needs to work on his game. If the Jets choose to bring Josh McCown back, they could use him in short yardage spot to limit his exposure while he’s still learning. He has the intelligence and drive to become a competent starter in this league. It’s just a matter of the right coaching.
