Tegray Scales is knocked for being undersized, unimpressive physically. All he did at Indiana was dominate in terms of production and against high level competition – Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin for four years and Scales was consistently up to the challenge.
Scales isn’t a technician. He’s really hit or miss when it comes to doing things the right way as a linebacker. Instead, he’s just a relentless player that is willing to do just about anything to get to the football. And in some ways, that chaotic style can be downright brilliant.
There are no shortage of examples where Scales takes on blocks to the wrong side or guesses on a read and is dead wrong, especially when it comes to play action. He’ll also come up with some incredible ways to shed blocks, avoid blockers entirely as he fights, scratches and claws his way to the ball carrier. There’s an innocence about his game where he looks like he was airdropped onto the field and just told to get the guy with the ball.
Certainly, the Browns or any other team would try to mold Scales into having more consistently effective habits, but in taking Scales, some of it is embracing the chaos and simplicity. If nothing else, it should be something a special teams coach loves about him. Hopefully he’ll able to continue adding muscle, but he should test pretty well when it comes to speed. With Scales, a lot of evaluators will look at his tape, see what he does wrong and move on, but he just gets the job done and his production has been outstanding.
