The New York Jets want to focus on building through the draft, but this is the year they need to start using free agency to add to the foundation.

March 12 is the beginning of the “legal tampering” prior to the official start of the free agency period. That’s when teams are permitted to begin contract negotiations with players who are set to become unrestricted free agents. The New York Jets need to get on that as soon as they possibly can.

Unlike the MLB Hot Stove this winter, expect the Free Agency period to be hot in the NFL. The free agent class is top-heavy, and there could be three teams (Browns, 49ers, and Jets) with potentially over $100 million in cap space.

The Jets have so many needs. They need to sure up their secondary, an edge rusher, a front-line replacement for Muhammad Wilkerson (whom they will likely cut), four offensive linemen, a running back, and a no. 1 wide receiver, because Robby Anderson should be cut.

The Jets have no reason not to walk away with multiple free agents in 2018. They’ll have the cap space. That doesn’t mean to overpay for someone not worth it (ie. a “franchise quarterback”). Let the bidding wars commence.
