Barrett is currently listed as a quarterback, and he can compete to be the third string and emergency quarterback. That said, he may have to swallow some pride here and make a position change, not to wide receiver though, but a few steps back in the backfield.

More from New York Jets

If Barrett wants to see playing time, he’s going to have to play a little running back. If the Jets want to employ some gimmick plays, they can also use him in RPO for short yardage plays.

Barrett has the running skills and build to be a power back in the NFL. He would be a good complimentary back to Elijah McGuire, who should see more snaps and touches in 2018 than he did in 2017 with Bates as the offensive coordinator.

The NFL isn’t about having one workhorse guy anymore (even though some teams do have that one guy). It’s about team production in the backfield. Barrett will have to learn how to block, but they can use him in this fashion as he’s learning how to be an NFL quarterback. It’s a perfect way for him to get on the field, give the Jets something and learn at the same time.
