Round 3: Derrick Nnadi, DT, Florida State

The Chargers are primed and ready to be an explosive offense with players like wide receivers Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Tyrell Willimas, tight end Hunter Henry and running back Melvin Gordon. The problem was, to some extent resided with the defense, which struggled to stop the run.

If they follow this path, the Chargers will have Derwin James to help out as a strong safety or linebacker, but he won’t be enough. They need a man in the middle of the line who can take on and shed blockers in route to stuffing the running back. Florida State’s Derrick Nnadi is the guy who can provide them with that.

According to NFL.com Nnadi excels at stopping the run and can do so in a 2-gap scheme:

"“Possesses outstanding play strength and can chunk plates around in the weight room like it’s nothing. Has good snap quickness. Able to attack gaps or read and react as 2-gapper. Keeps eyes peeled on ball-carriers. Can stick and shed blockers to catch runners darting through his gaps. Lateral agility and low pad level make him hard to secure and pin on move blocks.”"

Nnadi has all the qualities that Gus Bradley needs in his defensive tackles. Since Bradley often lines his tackles in the 0-technique over the center, or in the 1-technique, Nnadi’s strength and athletic ability could be dangerous. His 6-1, 300-pound build resembles guys like Geno Atkins and Aaron Donald who have dominated as gap defenders being disruptive in the run game and against the pass.
