The New York Jets have the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Here we take a look at a player they should consider: Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward.

It’s no secret that the New York Jets need an upgrade at cornerback. Morris Claiborne is not a true number one corner and he might not return for the 2018 season anyway. Gang Green sits in an enviable position in the upcoming NFL Draft. They own the sixth overall selection and can probably have their choice of premier cornerback prospects.

Last month I wrote that New York should consider selecting Joshua Jackson of Iowa. If he is off the board, another outstanding player they should target is Ohio State CB Denzel Ward.

This recommendation comes only if the Jets sign quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. If they don’t then I feel that General Manager Mike Maccagnan needs to draft a top QB prospect from among Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen, whoever is available when Gang Green is on the clock. I have a feeling though that Cousins will end up signing with the Jets so then Maccagnan can strengthen the secondary by making a sound decision in the first round.

Ward would fit the bill. The 5-f0,191-pounder was a first-team All-American last year for the Buckeyes. He ranked in the top 10 in the country with 15 pass breakups while adding two interceptions and 37 tackles (two for loss). He’s a tremendous athlete and ran in the 4×400 relay while in high school.

Let’s take a look at some of his highlights via YouTube:

The highlight video clearly shows Ward’s tremendous speed, footwork and balance. The Macedonia, OH native broke up a pair of sure receptions at the last-minute because of his anticipation and quickness. He can keep pace with swift wide receivers stride for stride. That is a true hallmark of a future number one corner on the professional level.

Ward has the long speed to stay with opponents on post and vertical routes. He’s a heady, intelligent player with sound instincts. He’s strong on contested catches and even blocked a punt on special teams last season. That kind of versatility really stands out on tape.

The former first-team All-Ohio high school star can make a jarring hit from time to time but he needs to show improvement in run support. He has a slight frame and needs to get a little stronger. Physical receivers can use their size to break past him initially but Ward can recover quickly with his burst and athleticism.

Ohio State has a knack for sending high-quality cornerbacks to the NFL. You have to look no further back than last year’s draft when Marshon Lattimore (Saints) and Gareon Conley (Raiders) were both selected in the opening round. Lattimore was the 2017 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. That’s a high bar for Ward to strive toward but he certainly has first round ability.

Ward is not a finished product yet but his ceiling is sky-high. The Jets have to seriously consider drafting him if he is available in the first round. Mix in Ward with Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye and Gang Green would have the makings of a tremendous young secondary.
