Washington Redskins vice president of player personnel, Doug Williams, met with local reporters at the NFL Combine and surprisingly candid on everything.
The Washington Redskins weren’t scheduled to speak at the NFL Combine in an official capacity this week and fans and the national media were aghast. Relax, folks. Washington had scheduled vice president of player personnel, Doug Williams, and head coach Jay Gruden to speak with members of the local media on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
For people thinking Williams received his promotion because of his past glory or close relationship with team president Bruce Allen, think again. Williams was candid on a plethora of topics Wednesday, beginning with quarterback Kirk Cousins and the team’s feelings on other soon-to-be free agents.
Williams and the Redskins can’t comment on new quarterback Alex Smith because the trade doesn’t become official until the new league year begins on March 14. That’s why Smith wasn’t mentioned by name. Williams represented the Redskins well and instead of leaving the session with more questions, Williams actually answered numerous topics related to the team.
Perhaps most surprisingly, Williams didn’t flinch when talking about Cousins. He’s a free agent and there will not be another franchise tag. Not only was that music to the ears of Cousins, but to fans of Washington, too. This soap opera is nearing its end.
Doug Williams says the franchise tag idea for Kirk Cousins wasn't really talked about within the organization like it was outside.
