Kansas City Chiefs: Post-Combine 7-round 2018 mock draft
The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot of work to do on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Their 365.1 yards allowed per game were the fifth most in the entire NFL in 2017. It was not long ago that this defensive unit was a massive strength, but last season, they struggled to stop opposing offenses with any sort of consistency.
The lack of a consistent pass rush was a major reason for their defensive issues last season. Aside from Justin Houston, the Chiefs do not have a reliable edge rusher on their roster. They need to beef up their pass rush and selecting Lorenzo Carter in the third round would be a step in the right direction.
Carter is an extremely long pass rusher who uses his great length to his full advantage. His ability to keep opposing blockers at a distance is an advantage for Carter both in the pass rush and while setting the edge.
The Georgia product also shows an explosive first step off of the snap and impressive overall speed and athleticism. He also bends around the edge extremely well.
Carter is a bit of a tweener prospect who may be too thin to set up on the line as a full time edge rusher. That being said, his speed and athleticism give him range that should translate well to pass coverage skills at the next level.
I could see the Chiefs draft Carter as a bit of a utility linebacker, primarily rushing the passer from the edge, but also being able to drop in coverage and fly around making plays against the run when asked to do so. Regardless, Carter would be a great value in the third round and also fill an immediate position of need.
