NFL Free Agency 2018: One move each team should make
Green Bay Packers: Sign CB Malcolm Butler
The Green Bay Packers have never been major players in NFL free agency. They typically prefer to build their roster through the draft and make sure to re-sign their own players whenever possible. That being said, with long-time general manager Ted Thompson stepping down this offseason and the growing NFL salary cap, we could see the Packers being more willing to attack specific targets on the open market.
This offseason, there are many interesting options at the cornerback position in NFL free agency. Luckily, cornerback stands out as a primary need for the Packers. In particular, Malcolm Butler would be a strong fit in Green Bay.
Butler went from undrafted free agent to Super Bowl hero for the New England Patriots in 2014, sealing a Super Bowl victory for the Pats with a game saving interception on the goal line. After that play, Butler became a full-time starter for New England and played at an extremely high level.
Butler is a feisty cornerback who shows impressive man-to-man skills on the outside. He lacks ideal size on the outside and is not an elite athlete at the position. However, Butler has good speed and quickness while also reading the opposing offense extremely well. Butler constantly seems to know what the receiver is doing before he does it, jumping routes and making plays on the ball in the air.
He is a reliable cornerback on the outside who would immediately fill a major need for the Packers. Butler is the exact player who the Packers should target this offseason in NFL free agency.
