NFL Free Agency 2018: One move each team should make
Kansas City Chiefs: Sign EDGE Junior Galette
The Kansas City Chiefs have been the most active team in the NFL early this offseason. They have already made two massive trades that reshape their current roster and long-term outlook. As soon as the Alex Smith trade becomes official, Kansas City will have a bit of cap space to work with, allowing them to do some work in NFL free agency.
Most of the Chiefs’ immediate needs are on the defensive side of the ball. They could legitimately be involved with free agents across all of their defensive positions, with edge rusher and safety standing out as the most obvious needs. This is a rather uninspiring free agent class at edge rusher, but there are a few under-valued players who could be real diamonds in the rough. Junior Galette stands out as a particular fit for the Chiefs.
Galette is a quick and explosive edge rusher who shows a strong overall pass rush skill set. He was a big-time talent for the New Orleans Saints back in 2013 and 2014, piling up 12 and 10 sacks in back-to-back seasons. However, after signing with the Washington Redskins prior to the 2015 season, he missed back-to-back season with two separate torn Achilles injuries.
Galette returned to the field with Washington in 2017 and showed some nice ability as a situational rusher. He still shows a great first step and has the athleticism need to bring consistent pressure off of the edge.
The Chiefs are unlikely to have the cap space needed to spend big in NFL free agency. However, they still have holes to fill. Galette is a strong under-the-radar target who would fit in well in Kansas City.
