Los Angeles Rams: Re-Sign S Lamarcus Joyner

When the league year begins later the month, the Los Angeles Rams will officially acquire cornerback Marcus Peters via trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. Peters is one of the premier cornerbacks in the entire NFL and will likely take the Rams’ secondary to the next level. However, if they lose both cornerback Trumaine Johnson and safety Lamarcus Joyner in NFL free agency, their pass defense is not going to improve.

With Peters in the fold, retaining Johnson seems unlikely. He is going to get a massive contract in free agency and Peters is a natural replacement at cornerback. Instead of re-signing Johnson, making Joyner the Rams’ offseason priority makes the most sense.

Joyner has really excelled at the free safety position with the Rams. He is a fantastic defender in the middle of the field, showing fantastic range and ball skills at the position. Joyner has also proved to be a versatile weapon for the Rams, showing the ability to come down and play in the box a bit and defending as a slot receiver.

Adding Peters to the mix gives the Rams a big-time cornerback on the outside. He is an absolute turnover machine, showing elite ball skills and field awareness. Peters is at his best when he can be aggressive. With Joyner backing him up on the deep side of the feel, Peters would have a chance to be as aggressive as he would like. Bringing back Joyner will not be cheap, but the Rams are a talented team who cannot afford to lose this guy on the back-end.
