NFL Free Agency 2018: One move each team should make
Los Angeles Chargers: Sign OT Breno Giacomini
The Los Angeles Chargers are projected to have a fair bit of cap space to work with this offseason. They could be major players in NFL free agency if they wish. However, the Chargers have a ton of impact players coming up for contract extension in the coming years.
Losing their long-term flexibility by blowing through the budget this offseason would not be a smart move for the Chargers. Instead, they should be targeting under-valued free agent targets who can help fill positions of need. Right tackle has been an issue for the Chargers in recent years and this seems like a good time to find a rock-solid option. Breno Giacomini stands out as a strong choice for this team.
Giacomini does not have huge upside at the right tackle position, but he is a technically sound player who always does his job well. He is a strong run blocker who can overwhelm defenders at the point of attack and consistently reaches the second level when asked to do so.
Giacomini has athletic limitations that cause him to struggle against speed in pass protection at times, but he handles power well and shows great technique and footwork in pass sets. This would not be the most exciting addition for the Chargers in NFL free agency, but Giacomini would be an immediate upgrade for the team, solidifying the right tackle position.
