Miami Dolphins: Sign OL Jack Mewhort

The Miami Dolphins have one of the worst salary cap situations in the entire NFL. Even worse, it is difficult to find players on the roster who they can easily move on from to create space. Unless something significant and unexpected happens, I do not expect Miami to be major players in NFL free agency.

That being said, they should be able to create enough space to make some lower money additions. Offensive guard stands out as a clear need for the Dolphins and ideally, they would be able to find at least one guard who could come in and make an immediate contribution. Searching through the options, Jack Mewhort feels like a strong fit.

Mewhort is a talented offensive lineman who shows a lot of ability both in the run game and as a pass protector. He is relatively strong, quick off of the snap and shows fantastic technique. Mewhort has success at right tackle and both guard spots for the Colts over the years and could easily fit in as a full-time starter for the Dolphins.

The downside here is injuries. Knee injuries have held Mewhort back the past two seasons, limiting him to 15 games played between 2016 and 2017. He ended both years on injured reserve for the Colts.

When healthy, Mewhort is a strong starting option up front, but his inability to stay healthy is obviously a concern. Mewhort may get priced out of the Dolphins’ range, but I could also easily see the injury risk keeping his price reasonable. Regardless, he is a player who makes sense for Miami.
