NFL Free Agency 2018: One move each team should make
New Orleans Saints: Re-Sign DE Alex Okafor
The number one priority for the New Orleans Saints this offseason is to get quarterback Drew Brees back in the fold. Once they lock in Brees, the Saints will still have a fair bit of cap space to work with, but they will not be able to go crazy in free agency. New Orleans already has a strong roster filled with impact talent on both sides of the ball. They need to use the upcoming NFL free agency period to fill specific holes on their roster with under-valued players.
There are a handful of free agents at linebacker at wide receiver who could make sense here, but re-signing defensive end Alex Okafor stands out as an obvious move. Okafor played a nice role for the Saints up front last season, racking up 4.5 sacks in 10 games. He is not an elite pass rusher on the outside, but Okafor has shown the ability to create consistent pressure and set the edge well with his well-rounded skill set.
The Saints have a strong defensive unit that has a lot of long-term upside. However, they are not exactly loaded with depth up front. Cameron Jordan is a stud at one defensive end position, but the Saints do not have a strong ready-made replacement for Okafor on the roster.
If they lose Okafor, the entire defense will take a step back. They need to make him a priority in NFL free agency this offseason.
