San Francisco 49ers: Sign CB Rashaan Melvin

If they could pry him from the Jacksonville Jaguars, signing Allen Robinson in NFL free agency to give Jimmy Garoppolo would make sense for the San Francisco 49ers. However, cornerback also stands out as an obvious need for this team and Rashaan Melvin is a perfect free agent fit who shouldn’t break the bank.

At 6-2, Melvin has great natural size and length at the cornerback position. Pairing him with Ahkello Witherspoon would give the 49ers one of the biggest starting cornerback duos in the NFL, which fits their defensive scheme extremely well. The 49ers love to rough up opposing wide receivers at the line of scrimmage, and playing press coverage is something that Melvin does at a high level.

Showing a natural ability to knock the ball away in traffic, Melvin uses his length extremely well in coverage. He is a tough and physical defender on the outside who attacks the ball extremely well. His press man-to-man skills are legit and he is a true playmaker at the cornerback position.

Melvin bounced around the league a bit before landing with the Colts last season. However, once he finally received a full-time opportunity in Indy, he immediately thrives. Melvin is a strong cover cornerback who fits the 49ers defense perfectly. Add in their obvious need at cornerback and Melvin is a clear free agent fit for this team.
