5. Brian Cushing

There are always ample opportunities to improve throughout free agency, which is why the Chargers would be wise to explore the middle linebacker market this month. There are a handful of solid players ready to contribute, but none may be better fit for Los Angeles’ defense than Brian Cushing.

The Chargers rolled with Hayes Pullard and Korey Toomer at inside linebacker last year, but it’s clear the team must find their replacements sooner rather than later. There’s more than enough blame to go around for the Bolts terrible run defense in 2017, but adding more talent at middle linebacker could help that weakness immediately.

There will obviously be some great options for the Chargers to choose from in the 2018 NFL Draft, but signing Cushing could provide the Bolts security until they find their long-term option in the coming years.

The veteran linebacker has always been productive, when healthy, for the Houston Texans, which means other teams will be calling for his services in 2018. If Los Angeles wants an opportunity to land this former Defensive Rookie of the Year, they’ll have to act fast.
