The Green Bay Packers will be looking to lock Aaron Rodgers up for the foreseeable future. A short Kirk Cousins contract could help them in a major way.

Kirk Cousins is expected to get a hefty contract this offseason. Meanwhile Aaron Rodgers wants to wait for Cousins to ink a new deal before negotiating his own extension. There’s simple enough reasoning behind this. Rodgers is a better quarterback than anyone on the planet, and he wants to get paid like it.

Obviously this is bad news cap wise for the Green Bay Packers. They’ll more-than-likely be shelling out a monstrous amount of money for Rodgers. It appears, however, that Cousins wants to help out a little bit.

The news is that the free agent wants a short-term contract with tons of guaranteed money. This might lower the price tag a tiny bit. What it will also do is give the Packers a chance to play the “security” card with Rodgers.

Rodgers can look at whatever contract Cousins gets from whatever team and say “I want more than that” and get his wish. Now though, the Packers can limit how much extra they have to pay by simply giving him years.

Throw a longer-term contract, like five-plus years at him. When you do so tell him two things. First off, you’re clearly committed to him for as long as he wants to be in Green Bay. This has already been a topic recently, as Rodgers stated he wanted Brady longevity in the league, but wasn’t sure if the Packers would keep him that long. This would be a clear sign that you’re riding the Rodgers train as long as you can.

Second, he’s still getting paid. If Cousins wants to gamble that he’ll still be more-valuable or even as-valuable as he is now in a few years, that’s great. Rodgers however will be guaranteed a hefty income over a longer period of time.

Kirk Cousins is going to make a ludicrous amount of money this offseason. Aaron Rodgers will probably make more. With Cousins wanting a short-term deal the Green Bay Packers may be catching a break though, even if it’s a small one.
