Jacksonville Jaguars: 3 Free agents worth adding to offense
By Larry Brake
2. DeMarco Murray
DeMarco Murray is a running back that Jacksonville would use to complement Leonard Fournette. Murray is a lighter version of Fournette. He has spent his career with three teams: Dallas, Philadelphia and Tennessee.
Murray was a third round selection by the Dallas Cowboys in 2011. He carried the ball 934 times for 4526 yards with 28 touchdowns in his four years with the Cowboys.
After spending 2015 in Philadelphia, he has been the starting running back in Tennessee. He has rushed for 1,946 yards on 477 carries with 15 touchdowns in 2016 and 2017. He is a three time Pro Bowl player.
Murray could step in as the goal line back as an alternative to Fournette. This would keep Fournette healthier due to less carries. Not to mention, Murray’s veteran presence have a calming effect on the younger players.
What kind of contract would Murray expect? Spotrac.com details Murray’s contract from 2016:
"DeMarco Murray signed a 4 year, $25,250,000 contract with the Tennessee Titans, including $12,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,312,500. In 2018, Murray will earn a base salary of $6,250,000 and a roster bonus of $250,000, while carrying a cap hit of $6,500,000."
Tennessee released Murray on March 8, 2018. Jacksonville should offer him a two year deal worth $7 million. At age 30, Murray will not get a high dollar deal. He could be effective in situations. A Fournette, Murray and T.J. Yeldon rotation would be an outstanding backfield. Which brings up the third free agent that Jacksonville should pursue.
