Talent isn’t everything. It doesn’t matter how good Baker Mayfield is or becomes, he doesn’t fit with the New York Jets.

When the New York Jets traded Sheldon Richardson last offseason to the Seattle Seahawks for a second round draft pick and Jermaine Kearse, it signaled a new beginning for the franchise. No longer would multiple off-the-field issues be tolerated.

Even though technically it was on the field, when Baker Mayfield grabbed his crotch against the Kansas Jayhawks after they snubbed his handshake at midfield, it was the end of Mayfield with Gang Green.

When you combine the crotch grab, the public intoxication, and his height, there’s enough there to take him off the draft board. Say what you will about the height Drew Brees and Russell Wilson, but Mayfield will likely not go to a team with caliber of defense they had when they won their Super Bowls. On top of that, you can’t be the face of your college football team, and first get arrested, and then have the sideline incident, and not expect those to be huge black stains on your résumé.

He then didn’t take an interview with the Chicago Bears. Another immature black mark that the Jets shouldn’t overlook. On top of this, drafting Mayfield would force the Jets to tailor the offense to his skill set. So, he’s not worth it in the long-run.

It’s one thing to keep Robby Anderson around after back to back offseasons with incidents in Florida and even consider bringing Richardson back. The face of the franchise can’t be Mayfield.

The Jets must steer clear of Mayfield. If he happens to fall to them, they must take a pass rusher, top corner or offensive lineman over him. He’s not the type of guy to build your future around. Frankly, it doesn’t matter how much talent he has. We can’t look back in the future like we did with other quarterbacks they passed on. He’s just not worth the risk with all the baggage, period.
