Salary Cap breakdown

Based on information from the website Spotrac, the Giants draft pool is going to be around $9,566,409 (not including their compensatory pick in Round 4). So, that leaves the Giants (before they cut more players) with around $14.2 million in cap space to spend on both their own and incoming free agents. That’s not exactly what you want to come into if you’re Dave Gettleman.

He will have to work some magic to get that number workable to sign both a key outside free agent or two, and keep some of his own. If they cut Janoris Jenkins, Eli Manning and Brandon Marshall (their three top moveable contracts), they will still only have $36.2 million, not enough to get into multiple bidding wars.

Let’s face it, the Giants are in a tough spot. They really can’t be big players in free agency in 2018. They can get a couple of key building blocks, but nothing major. They’re going to have to wait until 2019 to get the major building underway.

Gettleman is in a similar spot to where Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was in. It’s time to strip the roster, and start over. It will take some pain in 2018, but they need to start fresh.
