Chicago Bears: Allen Robinson signing massive for lacking receiving corps
With the Chicago Bears’ top priority being to improve the wide receivers corps, they’re expected to do that early in free agency by signing Allen Robinson.
The Chicago Bears expect to give quarterback Mitch Trubisky some help. Reports have them agreeing with wide receiver Allen Robinson to a three-year, $42 million deal.
Robinson missed the 2017 season with an ACL injury. Apparently, his medical report checked out. He had a great 2015, had 80 catches for 1,400 yards and a Jacksonville Jaguars team record 14 touchdowns. In 2016, he, along with the other receivers, struggled with an inconsistent Blake Bortles. He only had 73 catches for 883 yards and six touchdowns.
At 6-3, 220 pounds, Robinson gives Trubisky a big target. He’ll be helpful in the red zone, where he can use his big body to shield away defenders. Additionally, he can stretch out the defense. In 2015, he had 31 catches of 20 yards or more. Opposing defenses played the Bears’ receivers close because they couldn’t separate. Robinson opens things up and gives the other receivers more space (if they make catches).
Although they picked up a pretty good wide receiver, the Bears must do more. They still need to pick up another veteran receiver in free agency. They supposedly targeted Albert Wilson, who played under new coach Matt Nagy in Kansas City, but he’ll sign with the Miami Dolphins. Another reported target, Sammy Watkins, signed with the Chiefs.
Some have questions about Robinson’s injury, but he’s still young at 24. Even after the deal finishes, he’ll hit his prime. The Bears got themselves a No. 1 receiver. Now they need to add around him. Even if they pick up another receiver, expect them to still draft a wide receiver in the draft. General manager Ryan Pace needs to rehaul the receivers corps. The passing attack ranked dead last in the league in 2017. That needs to improve going on.

Many have said this is an important offseason for the Chicago Bears. They need to get the players they need to increase the wins. After a 14-34 record in his first three seasons in Chicago, Pace needs to hit this season or that extension he received won’t matter.
