Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been the biggest winner so far in the 2018 NFL free agency.

The 2018 NFL free agency is off and running, and Mitchell Trubisky must be thrilled about what the Chicago Bears have done so far. The Bears have signed wide receiver Allen Robinson to a three-year contract and tight end Trey Burton to a four-year pact. In the course of just a few hours, the Bears offense added two impact players who should immediately help improve the lackluster offense the team fielded in 2017.

Yes, Robinson and Burton are big winners here (especially with how much Burton got paid), but Trubisky is the biggest winner. Entering his second season, he’ll be surrounded by an offensive-minded head coach, a Pro Bowl running back in Jordan Howard, an electric weapon in Tarik Cohen, and now the two big free agent signings. The cupboard in not empty anymore, and Trubisky should find much more success in 2018.

The Bears aren’t (and shouldn’t be) done adding talent to the offense. But what they have done so far must be music to Trubisky’s ears. There’s also something to be said about what opposing players (i.e. Robinson and Burton) think of the second-year signal caller. Money is important to free agents, but several free agents last season turned down more money from the Bears because they didn’t feel the team was heading in the right direction.

However, several teams were in on both Robinson and Burton (including the 49ers and Packers) yet chose the Bears and Trubisky over them. A year ago, neither free agent is probably signing with the Bears. Trubisky’s presence—and the new coaching staff—are much more enticing to free agents, especially those on offense.

Trubisky hasn’t taken a snap yet in 2018, but his year is off to a great start. He has an innovative coaching staff and now more weapons surrounding him. If this keeps up, a second-year breakout season might just be in the cards.
