The New York Giants are in rebuild mode, and they need to start building their foundation with the 2018 NFL Draft.

According to Spotrac, the New York Giants have about $6.7 million in salary cap space, including if you factor in the rookie draft pool. That means they can’t really be active in free agency. Even if they cut Eli Manning and Brandon Marshall they’ll still only have $21.7 million in cap space. That means this offseason’s focus should be the NFL Draft.

The Giants may think they still have a year or two to build around Eli Manning before they hand the reigns over to the next guy. In truth, they may be right. Last season was bad, but it doesn’t necessarily mean Manning is done.

Let’s go back to 2004. Manning was drafted No. 1 overall by the Chargers then traded on draft day to the Giants. He didn’t make his first career start until Week 10 that season. Aaron Rodgers didn’t make his first start until his third season. So, there’s a precedent in the NFL for success in that way.

The Giants need to be successful in this draft if they want to win another Lombardi trophy in the near future. Let’s see how the 2018 NFL Draft shakes up them.
