Miami Dolphins: 2018 NFL Draft targets to speed up rebuild
Trade Ryan Tannehill, land Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield
With an easy way out of his contract, and Ryan Tannehill coming off an injury, the Dolphins should trade him on draft day. It’s not that Tannehill isn’t the answer — the problem is that we don’t know. Through his six-year career, the athletic quarterback out of Texas A&M has been consistently average.
With 18,455 yards, 106 touchdowns and 66 interceptions and a career completion percentage of 62.7, that average play checks out. Admittedly, he has shown steady growth, especially with his deep ball and pocket presence, but he hasn’t been able to elevate his team the next level with a starting record of 37-40 and just 10 game-winning drives.
He’s a solid NFL starter who needed extra time to develop because he had a steeper learning curve coming out. Unfortunately for him, the injury derailed his 2017 season, which would have been his second under head coach Adam Gase. In fact, Gase has been a Tannehill supporter, according to a series of tweets posted by Lindsay Jones of USA Today:
However, with the front office cleaning house, Tannehill is likely out next year. So, why not trade him and get something for him than draft a guy No. 11 overall. If they are lucky, a player like Josh Rosen could fall to them at 11, but the more likely situation would see Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield. If the Fins are in true rebuild mode, then taking a quarterback should happen, and so should the trade of Ryan Tannehill.
