A day before becoming a free agent, the New Orleans Saints inked a two-year deal with Drew Brees, setting huge expectations for him and the team.

The New Orleans Saints really did keep everyone on their toes. While Drew Brees probably wasn’t going anywhere else, they waited until the day before to seal the deal. A two-year deal worth $50 million, as reported by ESPN, Brees is staying a Saint until 2020.

The deal includes a no-trade clause and a team option in 2019 depending on how Brees plays and, obviously, his impending retirement. Basically, a rehash of their deal last season, the team is putting all their faith in Brees. Well, at least most of it.

As one of the greatest of all time, Brees deserves every bit of it. He’s become a cornerstone of the Saints offense and arguably, their greatest player ever. His time in New Orleans has been productive, both on and off the field. A Super Bowl ring is just icing on the cake for the 39-year old.

However, a Super Bowl ring is exactly why he took a “hometown discount.” Then again, how much of a discount is $50 million? Just kidding, but the Saints are keeping Brees because they know they’re a contender now. The team was so close in 2017 before losing it on a silly play against the Vikings.

2018 is the year of redemption and the year of Brees. Possibly his last year playing, Brees has a chance to not only get his team a ring but prove his value. While quarterbacks are getting younger and younger, Brees has wisdom and experience unlike anyone else in the league.

Some could argue Brady does, but Brees has been on both sides. He’s suffered tremendous losses and amazing wins. Through it all, he has stuck with the New Orleans Saints and they’re showing their appreciation for him.

Many are already stamping the team’s ticket to the Super Bowl. Brees’ new deal only fuels the discussion and is great motivation for the rest of the team. If the team is even half as good as they were last season, then the league should be scared.

Signing Brees was the team’s biggest worry this season and now, it’s over. They inked the deal and Brees will retire a Saint. Hopefully, he’ll have two Super Bowl rings to his name and soon, a Gold Jacket. 2018 is going to be the year of the Saints, most notably Drew Brees.
