Jacksonville Jaguars: Free agency shopping spree continues
By Larry Brake
The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced the signing of seven free agents. There might be more signings coming soon.
Many fans were wondering what the Jacksonville Jaguars would do in the free agent signing period. Since Allen Robinson and Aaron Colvin were the obvious targets, surprisingly, Jacksonville signed seven other free agents. The bigger question is, how many more players will they sign?
Robinson and Colvin signed to play elsewhere. Robinson chose the Chicago Bears. Colvin signed to play in Houston. Rather than standing empty handed, the Jaguars went on a shopping spree.
Jacksonville signed three defensive players and four offensive players. These moves may indicate which way the Jaguars will use their draft picks. Most noteworthy is the fact that Blake Bortles is the only quarterback on the team currently.
Ryan O’Halloran of jacksonville.com reports his discussion with Dave Caldwell approach to free agents:
"“We set a price per play and what we feel like is acceptable and what we can handle and we’ll go that level,” Caldwell said. “And then once we get off that level, we have to say, ‘Hey, this is far as we can go.’ And if it’s not enough for the player, we move on.”"
First, Jacksonville hit pay dirt with Andrew Norwell. He is the left guard that solidifies Bortles blind side. Norwell did not allow a sack last season according to Pro Football Focus. In replacing Robinson, Jacksonville signed Donte Moncrief. Marqise Lee re-signed to stay in Jacksonville. Apparently, the Jaguars signed two receivers for the price of one.
Niles Paul, formerly Washington’s special teams captain, signed with Jacksonville as a tight end. Mike Kaye of firstcoastnews.com reports Paul’s statement at a recent press release:
"“This is a fresh start for me in Jacksonville … amazing opportunity to continue to do the thing that I love, … football,” Paul said in a team-issued press release. “This is a good fit for me for a lot of different reasons, with special teams being the primary reason. I also look at it as an opportunity to showcase my abilities as an offensive weapon. I’m excited to get started.”"
Jacksonville signed D.J. Hayden to play in Colvin’s nickel corner spot. Cody Davis and Don Carey, both safeties, signed with the Jaguars. Probably, Davis and Carey will play on special teams.

Due to the flurry of signings, will Jacksonville sign any more? Because of other available free agents, Jacksonville may have sign their eighth player. Alex Butler of upi.com reports:
"The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed free agent tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins."
Will they sign a quarterback or draft one? The new season has only but begun.
