Josh McCown, QB

The 15-year veteran performed surprisingly well for New York last season, setting career-highs in passing yards (2,926) and touchdown passes (18) in 13 games. He also rushed for five touchdowns as well, another career-high. McCown also brought veteran leadership to a team that desperately needed it in the locker room and on the field. His teammates love him.

Here’s the rub though – the Jacksonville, TX native will be 39 in July. Can he duplicate his surprising 2017 campaign? Maccagnan inked him to a one-year, $10 pact so the risk factor is not extremely high. McCown can also be a mentor to Teddy Bridgewater and other quarterbacks on the depth chart. It’s a good fit for McCown and the Jets but will only work if Gang Green drafts a young quarterback in next month’s draft. That must be the plan moving forward.

The 6-4, 212-pounder gives them security in case Bridgewater does not pan out or if their high draft pick signal-caller needs time to develop. If either Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield are available for the Jets in round one (sixth overall), they have to select him. It’s a must. Then McCown and Bridgewater can battle it out for the starting nod in OTAs and training camp. This was another smart signing by Maccagnan.
