Chicago Bears: 5 Big-name free agents team could still sign
NaVorro Bowman, ILB, Oakland Raiders
Jerrell Freeman is gone. Danny Trevathan is always hurt. I believe Nick Kwiatkoski has a bright future in this league, but I don’t think he can hold down the middle of this Bears defense on his own. That’s why targeting a veteran inside linebacker would be ideal before the market is dried up.
NaVorro Bowman may have lost a step since his All-Pro days, but he’s still a quality starter. After the San Francisco 49ers gave him the ax last season, he wound up with the Oakland Raiders and didn’t disappoint. Although he’s starting to show signs of age (turns 30 in May) and has a long history of injuries, there’s no denying he’s better than most other options out there.
Better yet, it’s not like the Bears would have to dish out a massive contract to get him. He made only $2.5 million from the Raiders a season ago, a modest earning for a four-time All-Pro. Even if they gave him a significant raise coming off a quality 2017 campaign, it’s not like the Bears don’t have the cap space to afford it.
There’s a lot of talent on this Chicago defense, but they could use more leaders. Bowman is one of the best veteran leaders still on the market, and fills a significant need for the Bears.
Seems like a no-brainer, if you ask me.
