After the departure of Josh Sitton, the Bears were left with a rather uninspiring situation at guard. If they hope to keep Trubisky’s butt off the turf this season, they’d be wise to secure one of the top interior blockers left on the market.

Arguably the best guard still available, Jack Mewhort makes plenty of sense for the Bears. It’s true he’s battled through injury issues in recent seasons (a knee injury limited him to five games in 2017), but he’s a plus starter when healthy.

Despite the medical concerns, Mewhort is still only 26 years old and is more than capable of making an impact in Chicago. He’s a proven asset who has spent most of his NFL career dominating opposing defenders, primarily shining as a bulldozer in the run game. With experience at guard and right tackle, the 2014 second-round pick also offers some versatility.

My guess is the health problems have scared away suitors up to this point. The Bears could hypothetically sign him to a one-year, incentive-laden deal that gives him an opportunity to prove himself. If the knee issues crop back up, Chicago can let him walk in 2019 without losing out too much. If he excels, they hit a homerun at a fraction of the normal cost.
