The New York Jets traded up to the No. 3 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft and, if the Browns took Baker Mayfield first overall, that’d be best for Gang Green.

The New York Giants are sitting with the No. 2 overall pick, and as NFL Spin Zone’s Zac Wassink points out, their free agency moves indicate they’re in win-now mode. So, that means they may not take a quarterback in their spot. If they don’t, that means Sam Darnold and/or Josh Rosen may be available at No. 3 for the New York Jets. If that is the case, that would be great for the Jets. What would be the best case scenario is if Baker Mayfield isn’t.

Jets fans are already chomping at the bit for Mayfield to come to the Big Apple. Once the trade went down, social media blew up with fans desiring the Jets to draft the former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback.

Almost all Jets fans want the charismatic quarterback in green and white next season. There’s one problem. He’s not a fit for the Jets offense.

His accuracy isn’t based on anticipation. It’s based on guys being open and him getting the ball there. That won’t happen often in the NFL. His release is too low, and a high percentage of his passes could be batted at the line of scrimmage. Finally, he can be easily thrown off by delayed blitzes and disguised coverages, and that just the on the field issues.

What would the best case scenario be for the Jets? That’s simple. The Browns take Mayfield at No. 1 and ignore all the issues, and the Giants take Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson at No. 2 overall in another win-now move.

In that scenario, the Jets take either Rosen or Darnold. Both of them have higher floors and ceilings than Mayfield and are closer to being can’t miss quarterbacks. The likelihood of both of them falling to No. 3 is slim, but if it happens, the Jets will be in the catbird seat.
