Indianapolis Colts: 5 Targets in 2018 NFL Draft after trading down
4. Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
Getting to actual players that the Colts could target, we’re going to start with the least likely candidate for Indianapolis to select at the No. 6 overall pick. This has nothing to do with the need of the Colts at the running back position or a chance that they would just let him keep falling. The biggest reason this one is unlikely is that it would take Saquon Barkley falling out of the top five, which seems unlikely.
The Penn State Nittany Lions product is arguably the most dynamic running back prospect that we’ve seen in a full decade, and maybe longer. He blew up the Combine with his speed and athleticism, but he really was only putting numbers next to what you can see on film. His ability to cut and make plays out of nothing due to his athleticism is unbelievable. Then, when you factor in his ability as a receiver on top of his traditional running, he’s a perfect modern NFL running back.
It’s been a long while since the Colts have had a player who could be a bell cow back in their backfield. Barkley is that and more for this team, and is a guy who would immediately take pressure off of Luck upon the return of the quarterback to action. That’s something that the signal-caller and team would like, thus making Barkley an ideal pick for them.
He just has to make it to No. 6, which is less likely than not.
