Chicago Bears: 7-Round 2018 mock draft after free agency first wave
Yes, the Bears re-signed both of their starting cornerbacks, Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara. Also, they also have a pretty good Bryce Callahan. However, with the passing game being boss in the NFL, having an overflow of good corners isn’t a bad thing. Besides, Fuller and Amukamara have a history of injuries so having someone who can step in is good. Drafting a tall corner helps even more when you see all the tall receivers in the league.
Kameron Kelly is another defender who gives the Bears defense some flexibility. He spent most of his college career as a safety before converting to a cornerback so he’s familiar with both positions. Additionally, he’s played wide receiver so he understands the routes receivers run and what they want to do.
Having played safety a lot, Kelly learned to hit and hit hard. Having hard-hitting players is a staple of the Chicago Bears defense. Also, being able to give receivers something to think about from a cornerback and not a linebacker or safety gives the defense an advantage. With nine career interceptions, Kelly is also a ball hawk. This is something the Bears need. While Fuller, Amukamara, and Callahan had good seasons in 2017, they combined for just four interceptions. The defense needs to help the offense play on a short field once in awhile. Running long drives isn’t a way to score many points.
Kelly has the ability to become a number one corner. Along with his athletic ability, he has the size at 6-2, 200 pounds. The great thing is he doesn’t have to come in at Day 1 to be the man. The Bears starters are good enough to have Kelly grow into the No. 1 spot. He’ll do well in the rotation and eventually takes over.
