Green Bay Packers: 5 Big-name free agents team could still sign
Frank Gore, RB, Indianapolis Colts
The Packers don’t have a very inspiring situation going for them at running back right now. While it’s assumed they’ll address the position via the 2018 NFL Draft, I feel like adding a proven veteran would be better than adding another young, inexperienced option to the group.
If that’s the route they end up taking, they should look to one of the most reliable running backs in recent history. Frank Gore may be well past his prime at the age of 34, but he’s proven year after year that he can be depended on for consistent production in the ground game.
Just look at his 2017 campaign with the Indianapolis Colts. Sure, the numbers weren’t speculator, with Gore averaging only 3.7 yards per carry and striking paydirt only three times. However, he turned in a couple of excellent outings and even contributed a bit as a receiver. We also have to consider his offensive line was in shambles and Andrew Luck wasn’t under center.
Running behind a much better line with defenses focused on Aaron Rodgers, Gore could excel in Green Bay. He’s no long-term solution, and would likely cede a handful of carries to younger players like Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones. At the same time, he’d come cheap and offers far more veteran savvy than anyone the Packers currently have on the roster.
