Green Bay Packers: 5 Big-name free agents team could still sign
Jack Mewhort, G, Indianapolis Colts
The Packers need an injection of talent along the interior of the offensive line in a big way. The departures of T.J. Lang and Josh Sitton are coming back to haunt Green Bay, and the fact that Rodgers is coming off a major injury makes it that much worse.
The Packers need to ensure their franchise quarterback is better protected in 2018. That’s why they need to go out and grab a veteran blocker with what cap space they have remaining. If they do decide to go down that path, Jack Mewhort should be the guy getting the call.
There is one significant concern, though. Mewhort is coming off a 2017 campaign that ended with him on Injured Reserve. A knee injury held him to only five games, and it wasn’t the first health problem that has stunted his progress. Still, when he’s actually on the field and healthy, he looks like one of the better guards in the NFL.
At 26 years old, the 2014 second-round pick still has many years of stellar play ahead of him. If the Packers are invested in giving Rodgers some better blocking moving forward, Mewhort should be getting a call from Brian Gutekunst very soon.
