Kenny Vaccaro, SS, New Orleans Saints

Morgan Burnett is gone; he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after eight years in Wisconsin. The Packers secondary was already weak after a rough 2017 campaign, and is now missing its best player. It’s time to find an alternative via free agency instead of hoping a rookie will pan out.

It’s not like Josh Jones showed well during his first year in Green Bay. Sure, the ridiculous athleticism is still there. At the same time, he’s an inexperienced option who simply can’t be depended on at this point. It’s not like the Packers have a ton of depth behind him who can step up if needed, either.

Hence, the inclusion of Kenny Vaccaro. Yes, I know he’s not the most exciting of options. A former first-round pick, he’s struggled to live up to the billing through his first five seasons in the NFL. Although he made plenty of plays for the New Orleans Saints over the years, he’s not the most reliable of options on the backend.

And yet, he’s about the best bet they’ve got.

Vaccaro can play either safety spot or slot cornerback — personally, I’m a big fan of versatility. So even if Jones steps up as a sophomore, the former Saint can slide in and provide support at cornerback, a position Green Bay could also use reinforcements at in 2018.
