Take a pass rusher before they’re gone

As mentioned above, the Rams parted ways with Robert Quinn, the former defensive turned outside linebacker who lead their linebackers in sacks with 8.5. Three-year pro Matt Longacre has shown some signs of being a productive player inside of Wade Phillips scheme this past season with 5.0 sacks coming off the bench.

And whether Connor Barwin returns or not, the Rams should look to draft a pass rusher. In fact, the Rams could have an opportunity to draft a player eerily similar player to Barwin, who will turn 32 this October. Wade Phillips was the defensive coordinator when the Texans drafted Barwin with the second overall pick in 2009. And could be the DC in LA when the Rams take Harold Landry.

The two men are very similar as it pertains to their measureables and athletic prowess. Barwin came out 6-4, 256 pounds and posted 21 reps on the bench press, a 40-inch vertical jump, a time of 4.66 seconds in the 40, a 6.8-second 3-cone and a 4.18-second short shuttle. At the Combine, Landry was measured at 6-3, 252 pounds while posting 24 reps, a 36-inch vertical jump, a 4.64-second 40, 6.8-second 3-cone and 4.19-second short shuttle.

Landry’s ability to come off the edge is second to none and it’s why scouts believe he’ll be a double-digit sack guy. In Phillips’ system where Aaron Donald was used all over the place, Landry could benefit the same way. With the ability to dominate with his hand in the dirt, fantastic burst, and athleticism he’ll be able to play standing up. If the Rams retain Barwin, Landry is one of those guys who can be used as a specialist early on before ultimately becoming a starter.
