The Giants have gotten more draft picks in a trade that sent Jason Pierre-Paul to Tampa Bay. Is Bradley Chubb now in play at No. 2?

The New York Giants made a splash in the 2018 NFL Draft, and we’re still 35 days away. They sent Jason Pierre-Paul and their fourth round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the Bucs’ third and fourth round picks this year. So what does that mean for the No. 2 overall pick?

Almost all possibilities that have been brought up are now in play, but now they could consider Bradley Chubb at No. 2 overall. The Giants are switching to a 3-4 scheme, and they will need an edge presence on the outside on the second level of the defense.

That doesn’t mean all the other possibilities go away either. They could still take Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, a quarterback (albeit highly unlikely), or trade down.

The most intriguing part of the trade is that it now opens up the door for Chubb to go No. 2, and that could take him away from the Colts, who traded down with the Jets. It all depends on how the Giants plan to employ their 3-4 scheme.

If the Giants plan on using their outside linebackers as pass rushers, they will need more interior linemen as well as an edge rusher in the draft, which squarely puts Chubb in play as a 3-4 outside linebacker. If the Giants plan on using a wider front and using their ends as the primary pass rushers, then he’s not in play.

The draft will tell the story of how the Giants plan to use their 3-4 scheme. Chubb is in play, and if they draft him, it will likely be to move him to the second level. We will find out on draft night what their plans are with that pick. Until then, we wait in suspense.
