Green Bay Packers: Don’t expect running back help early in draft
By Hunter Noll
The Green Bay Packers don’t have the most loaded running back group. However, needs at other spots will prevent them from addressing it early in the draft.
The Green Bay Packers running back corps consists of three main names. Ty Montgomery was joined by Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams last season to create the group. The three together create a decent backfield. While it’s nothing special, they are far from miserable.
Meanwhile, the NFL has some major running back potential. The group is headlined by Saquon Barkley, but features names like Derrius Guice and Ronald Jones II. There’s also the Georgia duo of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb.
Despite the star-power, don’t expect the Packers to be looking at running backs early in the draft. While their running backs aren’t perfect, Green Bay has much bigger needs at multiple other positions.
As shown last year, they’re in desperate need of a few things. The Packers offensive line is starving for depth, while their defensive line and secondary both need to be bolstered in a bad way.
Speaking of star-power though, that could play to the favor of Green Bay. While they’ll miss out of Barkley and Guice, as well as a few others, there will still be plenty of potential stars late in the draft.
Chubb could be joined by Kerryon Johnson of Auburn and a few others still available well past the third round. At that point, the Packers may have been able to addressing their more pressing needs. If that happens, not only will Green Bay be able to scoop up a talented running back, they’ll have their choice between quite a few.

The Packers current crop of running backs can hold their own. They might not be game-changers, but they all bring something different to the table and can help Aaron Rodgers in the offense. Due to that, don’t expect this to be a focus of their upcoming draft. With so much talent at the position this year though, they can still upgrade at the position in the later rounds.
This is the perfect draft to be not-to-light-but-still-looking-for-help at the running back position. That just so happens to be exactly where the Green Bay Packers are.
